The Truth About Travel

Travel isn’t always as glamorous as the pictures suggest. There are the incredible moments, of course: wandering through ancient streets in Europe, taking in the beauty of art and history around every corner, or discovering a quiet cafe where you can sip espresso while watching life unfold. But behind those picturesque scenes are missed trains, language barriers, exhaustion, and the occasional wave of homesickness. And yet... I keep going. I keep booking that flight, packing my bag, and stepping into the unknown. Because somehow, despite the challenges, it’s always worth it.

My study abroad experience in Europe was eye-opening in ways I never expected. It wasn't all Insta-worthy moments and exciting adventures. There were difficult days. Those moments when I had no idea what was going on or couldn’t understand what people were saying. But it was in those moments, when I had to figure things out on my own, that I learned the most about myself. I had to let go of control, embrace the discomfort, and trust that I’d figure it out. That’s what travel does to you: it teaches you patience, adaptability, and resilience. It strips you down and makes you realize how much you’re capable of, even in the face of uncertainty.

What’s been most surprising about my travels isn’t the "bucket list" landmarks. It’s the little moments that stick with me: a long walk down a quiet street in Prague, talking to a local shopkeeper in Florence who shared her story with me, or sitting on a park bench in Paris, watching the sunset over the Seine. It’s these simple, unplanned experiences that have shaped my perspective. Travel forces you to slow down and see the world for what it truly is, not just the tourist sites, but the people, the culture, the tiny moments in between.

So yes, travel is hard. It can be messy, it can be overwhelming, and it can leave you exhausted. But it’s also the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. It has taught me more than I ever imagined about the world and about myself. It has shown me that no matter how different the places we go, we are all just people, trying to make sense of it all. If you’ve ever thought about going, whether for a semester, a year, or just a few weeks, take the leap. Not to escape life, but to find it in places you never expected.
